_The Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California is proud to announce that
Mary E. Brown, President & CEO of the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation of California and Camp Director of Camp Crescent Moon received
the American Camp Association's 2012 Legacy Award for the ACA Southern California/Hawaii section.
The Legacy Circle Award's Ceremony was held on January 25th at 6:00 pm at in Newport Beach, CA.
Membership in the Legacy Circle honors the vision and support of individuals who have been committed to the field of organized camping and ACA for more than 30 years. They have served in leadership capacities in Southern California or Hawaii and have made significant contributions to the camp industry.
Camp Crescent Moon is the nation's first and oldest summer camp for children with sickle cell disease. Children with sickle cell disease are not eligible to attend traditional summer camps due to the medical complexities of sickle cell disease.
Founded by Dr. Darleen Powars, retired pediatric hematologist at the LAC/USC Medical Center in 1967, Camp Crescent Moon continues to thrive. Dr. Powars retired as the camp's Medical Director in 2001, and under the direction of Dr. Cage Johnson as Camp Medical Director and Mary E. Brown as Administrative Camp Director, participation has grown from 27 in 1967 to approximately 100 campers in attendance each year.
In addition to serving as the Director of Camp Crescent Moon for the past 30 years, Mary currently serves on the board of directors for the Painted Turtle Camp, a summer camp for children with life threatening illnesses. Mary has also been a standards visitor for the American Camp Association and a camp counselor for the Girls Scouts Osito Rancho camp.
The American Camp Association (formerly known as the American Camping Association) is a community of camp professionals who, for 100 years, have joined together to share knowledge and experience and to ensure the quality of camp programs. As a leading authority in youth development, ACA works to preserve, promote, and improve the camp experience.
On behalf of the SCDFC Board of Directors and Staff, Camp Crescent Moon Campers, Volunteers and Staff, we thank Mary E. Brown for her hard work, diligence, sacrifices and support of Camp Crescent Moon.
